FRI 4 JULY

The Filth
featuring
Lost Valentinos

With successful weekly residencies at Bondi’s Beach Road and Will & Toby’s …The Filth now comes to Sonar for some more filthy fun with live music every friday night. This Friday feturers:
Lost Valentinos, Kill Teen Angst (WA) and The Vignettes.

From the moment they first took to a dusty stage in early 2005, Lost Valentinos offered more than meets the eye. Behind the fashionable aesthetics and manic demeanour stands a band intent on forging original ground, a skittering shitstorm of punk fury, disco beats and psychedelic excursions, the sonic invention of M83, Can and My Bloody Valentine melding with the panty-poking fun of Wham!, The Pixies and The Human League.

It was the band's live intensity that quickly endeared them to audiences. With wiry frontman Nik slithering and exploding in a lusty spectacle, the Santamaria brothers' fanning the flames with propulsive rhythms and searing melodies, drummer Dan's breakneck brutality and guitarist Jonno Ma's dissonant ambience, Lost Valentinos immediately established themselves as one of the most exciting acts in Sydney’s indie quarters. By the time their self-titled EP (produced by Kim Moyes of The Presets) hit store shelves later in the year, their up-and-coming reputation was solidified, with the EP's initial pressing selling out in its first week of release and publications such as Rolling Stone, Nylon and Vice UK hitting up the band for their tear-jerking tale of success. Their first single, the noirish and anthemic “Man With The Gun”, immediately achieved high rotation on Triple J and earned the band a featured spot on the station’s Next Crop segment.

With support slots with like-minded acts such as The Presets, The Liars (US) and Datarock (Norway) under their collective belts, Lost Valentinos have worked hard to spread their seed around the country. An extended EP has just landed in Japan and a 12-inch featuring remixes of their work by such fancy knob-twiddlers as Headman (Sui), Bang Gang DJs, Van She and many more is set for release in the UK. A whole new audience is set to discover the unique intensity of Lost Valentinos, and all that’s left to do is Dance Or Die. We’d choose Dance.

Doors: 7.30pm
The Vignettes: 8.30pm - 9.15m
Kill Teen Angst: 9.45pm - 10.30pm
Lost Valentinos: 11pm - 12am

SAT 5 JULY

Paper Champion

Showcasing Paper Champion, Nucleus & Nina May; the gamut of alternative sounds, this will be a unique night of music with three top-quality bands. And all for $10!

Fresh off the stage after supporting some of Australia’s premier rock acts at the 2008 Come Together Festival, Paper Champion bring their diverse alternative sounds to Sonar to launch their brand new, free digital single ‘Arrested’. After releasing a critically lauded EP in ’07, ‘Arrested’ represents the next evolution in Paper Champion’s sound, focussing on stronger hooks and tighter rhythms while maintaining the band’s trademark dynamic sound.

After being together for around 18 months, Paper Champion have shared bills with a wide range of acts including Dead Letter Circus, The Red Paintings, Mammal and Many Machines on Nine, as well as being invited to be a part of the prestigious Come Together Festival.

Local progressive juggernauts Nucleus also join the bill, showcasing new material from their second EP Circumvolution. Epic and powerful, Nucleus’ music ebbs and flows, combining abstract grooves and stadium-sized riffs with delicate, effects-laden melodies and a subtle touch of electronic trimmings.

Rounding out the bill are Queensland rockers Nina May who come to Sydney on the back of a formidable reputation, having supported The Veronicas, Good Charlotte, Dead Letter Circus, Kisschasy and scoring an enviable spot on MTV’s The Lair program last year. Incendiary live shows are Nina May’s forte and they’re certainly a band not to miss.

Doors: 7.30pm
Nina May: 8.30pm - 9.15pm
Nucleus: 9.45pm - 10.30pm
Paper Champion: 11pm - 12am
